Sharons 1993 MK1 Golf GTI Sportline
The Person
Hi my name is Sharon and I own this lovely 1993 MK1 Golf GTI Sportline. Just at the point that Adrian (aka lhasadreams on the forum) was buying his Mk1, my car was rolling off of the production line (it was one of the last cabbys ever to be made !!). Little did I know at the time that some 15 years later, it would be mine!
A few years ago I was diagnosed with epilepsy. At the time I was driving a new Polo, so unfortunately that had to go because I just didn't know how long it would take to get it under control and even then you have to be 12 months seizure free to drive again. I always knew that I had a pot of money from the polo to spend on a car so that sort of kept me going.
The Purchase
Towards the middle of last year I was cleared to drive again but, what to do about getting a car? I had managed without, in fact the walking to work had really helped to get me into shape and I was not about to sacrifice that !! What I needed was a car that would not depreciate much so Adrian suggested that we look for a MK1 cabby (not really my cup of tea, but I agreed to go and look at some).
After many fruitless viewings, Adrian found the Sportline in Durham. We set off on our 200 mile trip to go and look at her. I decided to take out insurance and some cash as we really didn't want to go up there twice. A deal was stuck and I drove her home all the way with the roof down and the sun in my hair !!
The Project
Since purchasing the car Adrian has replaced all the brakes with a Mk2 16v Golf setup, fitted a new suspension and fixed all the annoying things like a broken glove box lid and blown dash bulbs. Also he has fitted a Jetex exhaust to replace the very loud back box that had been fitted previously. The brakes aside the one thing that I was most shocked with was the brightness of the headlights, they were awful. Adrian has fitted a headlight loom and some of those ‘95% brighter bulbs’. They are better than my Polo's now!!
The paint on the car was suffering from areas of lacquer peel so I decided that it had to be re-sprayed. When the car was returned from the paint shop I was so happy with the results - it was like a new car again !!
We both went to ultimate dubs this year and I saw another Sportline with a leather interior - I just had to have mine done - there was just about enough in the pot from selling my Polo. The car was booked in at Classic Car Services in Thurmaston and entrusted to a highly skilled craftsman that is Steve Hartley. The results of his work were absolutely stunning!

The pot is now well and truly empty !! But I have a stunning car that is not depreciating. I have lost count of the number of people that have admired it, mainly men, women just seem to see it as ‘an old car’ - their loss !!

Thanks very much for looking,
Sharon
